What can I do if the deodorant gives me a rash?

First of all, baking soda is incredibly effective at neutralizing odor. It does this by creating an alkaline environment against your skin where bacteria cannot thrive. Having a layer of baking soda on your skin causes the skin in that spot to become more alkaline than it’s normal pH, and so the body releases acids to counteract this and regain normal pH levels. If your body releases LOTS of acid, then the skin may become inflamed and a rash may appear.

So what should you do?

The first way to deal with this is to simply apply less deodorant and see if that helps. Don’t apply twice in one day without showering in between. When you are in the shower, make sure you wash your armpits well and remove all the deodorant before applying a fresh layer. This way the baking soda won’t accumulate. Be careful not to apply right after shaving if you tend to be sensitive. Also, coconut oil gets very hard at cooler temperatures, so warming it up against your skin as you apply, allowing it to soften, can help reduce friction. If a rash develops, stop using the deodorant until it heals, and then give it another try. If the rash is mild and tolerable, continue to use the deodorant carefully as sometimes your body will adjust and the rash will clear up. Another trick to try is to apply apple cider vinegar diluted in water with a spray bottle or cotton pad to your pits before applying the deodorant. The ACV and baking soda will neutralize the pH change.

You may notice that your body may take a little time to adjust when switching to this deodorant. If you are used to using conventional deodorant and especially antiperspirant, you may notice your armpits will sweat a lot when you switch to ours. This, we believe, is a “detox period” as your body removes the toxic build up from those chemicals. They are, in a sense,” crying” from joy that you are no longer polluting your pores with chemicals. A little irritation may accompany this stage. Let this happen and give it some time. It does get better!

If you are reading this because you have experienced a rash from using our deodorant, we am truly sympathetic. Reactions are few and far between, but they do happen. If you have a rash that persists even after trying everything we’ve mentioned, then maybe you need to try my baking-soda-free Sensitive Skin Formula.

Is your baking soda aluminum free?

The baking soda we use is from Natural Soda in Colorado. We phoned the sales rep, Ryan Stanton, to gain accurate information on the topic of aluminum in baking soda.

Natural Soda baking soda is extracted from 2000 feet underground using hot water. They are the only facility in the country that uses that method and extracts 100% sodium bicarbonate. This company supplies other companies, including Bobs Red Mill, with baking soda. Bobs Red Mill actually claims that their baking soda is “aluminum free”, but according to Ryan they have since removed this claim. That isn’t to say that they realized that there is aluminum in their soda, it’s because they can’t determine that there isn’t. Natural Soda has had 3rd party testing done to determine its purity, and no test has ever shown the presence of aluminum. However, because sodium bicarbonate is mined out of the ground, and geographically we know that the earth is made up of many different minerals, there is a POSSIBILITY that there may be heavy metals in their product. The measurement  (5ppm of heavy metals) is a precautionary statement the company is making. That is the maximum measurement that may be present, it may be less. Aluminum may be one of those metals, or may not. Because of this, any company using Natural Soda baking soda cannot claim “aluminum free”. And according to Ryan, organic baking soda does not exist. He said they are OMRI certified (which is a product that is pure enough to be used in organic products).

I find the deodorant too firm to apply, is there something wrong with it?

The deodorant is made primarily of coconut oil which can become very hard at cooler temperatures. If you are finding the deodorant too firm, if it’s chaffing and dry feeling, or if it’s pulling armpit hair, it’s very likely the problem is simply that it’s too cold. On the directions it is recommended that you apply to warm, damp skin following a bath or shower. This will allow the coconut oil to soften for easier application. You can also use a hair drier to warm the surface of it. Applying it cold can also risk irritating the skin, so be sure to follow the directions to maximize the benefits of this amazing deodorant.

Of course the opposite can also happen if the deodorant is too warm. This may cause it to become very soft and mushy when applied. This can happen if stored improperly in a hot car or beside a heater. A few minutes in the fridge can easily solve the problem.

It is also possible that your particular stick is defective. All the deodorants are made by hand and slight variations can happen from batch to batch. If you feel that you have a “bad” deodorant, please contact us for a replacement.

“I am 48 years old and have spent a lifetime of sweating every form imaginable of deodorant and antiperspirant onto my clothes, giving them an undesirable odour that I could never get rid of once it was in the fibers. I can typically wear garments for a season then have to live with embarrassing odour or replace the garment.
YOUR DEODORANT IS A MIRACLE!! I feel completely safe using it, and I can often go two days in a row without having to reapply it. My clothes never EVER smell of sweat and deodorant anymore!!! 35 years Leah! All I can say is thank-you. I even told my mom and she can’t believe I have finally found a solution. And its an all natural one to boot! So fantastic. I’m sure not everyone gets this excited about deodorant, but what can I say!”

KL deodorant has become one of my staple products – can’t go without it! After trying most “natural” deodorants on the market – and being disappointed time after time – I finally found something that works and I’m sticking with it!

I have known for many years the health risks of using conventional deodorants, but have never found a good natural alternative until now. Leah’s products work! I’m a hard working horse girl who is a very satisfied user of KL deodorant.

I was visiting Nelson a few weeks ago and bought one of your deodorants from a local store. I absolutely love it and I can’t believe how well it works! I’ve tried many natural deodorants and none of them have worked for me. I would love to order more if I could. I have coconut lime and I love it!
